Barcode vs manual stocktaking
When EPOS barcode scanning fits a UK stocktake — and when a manual stock audit is the better method. Many sites use a mix.
Two ways to count the same stock
Professional stocktakes collect what is physically on the premises and turn it into a usable stock-in-hand figure. The collection method depends on how products are labelled and how the site is run — not on a one-size rule for every shop or warehouse.
The Stocktake offers both approaches on EPOS barcode scanning and manual stock audits. For a speedy, efficient, accurate and detailed stocktake, we use handheld EPOS barcode scanners and software to collect the data. We provide reports catering to your stocktaking needs. Where barcodes are missing we carry out a manual stock audit.
Side-by-side
Barcode / EPOS scanning
Handheld scanners collect line-level data when products are barcode-coded and the product file is usable. That usually means a faster, detailed count with reports that match how you need the figures presented.
- Best when coding is consistent across shelves and stockrooms
- Supports detailed department or line reporting
- Needs a usable product file and readable barcodes on the day
Manual stock audit
A hand count is used where scanning is not practical: missing barcodes, mixed or loose stock, damaged labels, or sites where a file-led scan would slow the job down.
- Best when labelling is incomplete or stock is not line-coded
- Still produces a professional stock-in-hand figure
- Often combined with scanning on the same visit
How to decide for your premises
- Are most sellable lines barcode-coded and scannable on the shelf?
- Can you provide a current product file if scanning is planned?
- Is stock held in bulk, loose, or mixed packs that scanners will struggle with?
- Is the count for a business transfer, a year-end or periodic figure, or both?
We will say which method fits after we know the premises and the system. Call 07765 225 009, WhatsApp, or use the contact form for a no-obligation quote. Quotes can save up to 25% against typical market charges.
Same-day reporting either way
Method choice does not change the reporting standard: You will be given a detailed summary of cost and retail value of the stock on the day. Trading since 2013.
Sectors that use both methods
Barcode and manual counts apply across retail, warehouse, and forecourt shop and stockroom work. Further premises types (including pharmacies) are on types of business.
